Knowing you need help is the first step in living a better life. It can be hard to come to terms with the fact that you cannot help yourself on your own, but it does not make you weak to ask for help. No matter who you are or what you struggle with, therapy can be a great way to learn and grow. Whether you just need someone to talk to, or if you need help dealing with your anxieties, there are multiple different types of therapies you can attend to receive the help you need.

Research

Researching the different types of therapy is incredibly important. All therapists have different specialties, therefore knowing what you need and what your goals are is critical. Go online, talk to close friends or family, call different treatment centers. The therapists that do not focus on themselves and their accomplishments but rather what they can do for you and their different philosophies of treatment are the ones you want to steer towards. It is also important to decide on what gender you would be most comfortable speaking with.

Experience

If you are struggling with a certain issue (e.g., anxiety, depression) make sure the therapist is experienced in that field. To receive the best form of treatment, they should have exposure to these specific issues so they can come up with an effective form of treatment.

Awareness

When you are on the phone with your potential therapist, pay close attention to the way you feel. It is completely normal to feel nervous for the first phone call, you may not know right away that they are the one. When you meet with them for the first time, pay close attention to how you feel, do you feel listened to? Do you feel like all their attention is on you? Are they taking notes? Are they asking the right questions? Notice everything that is going on and how it is making you feel. Again, you might not know right away if they are a good fit for you but paying attention to how they react and how they listen is key to finding that out. It is important to know that if you do not believe they are a good fit for you, you do not need to go back. Just let them know what you are looking for and why they are not a good fit for you and maybe they can recommend someone they know or help you find someone new.

Check Licensing and Insurance

Do a little background check on them as well, make sure they are qualified for the job as well as covered by your insurance. Going to therapy can be a pretty penny, but if it is covered by your insurance it can be affordable for almost anyone who needs it. Also, make sure that the requirements of your insurance company are being filled.

Remember, You Call the Shots

If you feel uncomfortable in any way, remember that you do not have to settle. There are so many different therapists out there, and there is one that is right for you. You should always feel understood, listened to, and accepted. Seeing a few different therapists before you find one that makes you feel this way is completely normal. If you remain open and willing to receive the help you need, therapy can be extremely beneficial.
