Mental Health Case Study


Our mental health case study below is a hypothetical example based on our experiences. Our clients’ information is held in strict confidence as a condition of our agreements in every case.

Kurt is a 28-year-old man with bipolar disorder and a history of psychiatric hospitalizations. With a team of clinicians in place, Kurt still struggles to live independently. To facilitate the goal of independent living, OPG provided the following services:

  • A Therapeutic Recovery Coach lived with Kurt in his apartment
  • His Coach coordinated with his clinical treatment team (therapist, psychiatrist, family therapist) to ensure that he was attending scheduled appointments, and provided regular reporting to the team about Kurt’s day to day status
  • The Coach provided transportation to and from appointments with his team, and other responsibilities which Kurt had struggled to manage independently
  • Implementation of mood management and stabilization skills developed by his clinical team
  • Stress management skill building that included assisted Kurt with unfamiliar or uncomfortable tasks
  • In-home drug and alcohol testing
  • Monitored medication compliance
  • Assisted with basic living skills (e.g., created weekly budget, time management skill application, developed healthy and regular eating patterns)
  • Participated in healthy lifestyle activities (e.g. accompanied him to local meditation and yoga sessions, engaged in outdoor bike and climbing sessions, attended local concert)
