Wondering if life will ever be the same after completing the components or requirements of a customized treatment plan is common when individuals are questioning the path of recovery. Even when life has become unmanageable and we are in practically excruciating emotional pain, we cling onto our ideas of what life was, is, and could be. Struggles with mental health, be it substance use disorders or other mental health disorders, are not typically part of “the plan”, especially when we have careers. We feel we cannot take time to recover or even have problems in the first place because we are career people. What will happen to our job? What will happen to our life? What will happen to our career after treatment?
Working with O’Connor Professional Group, we realize there is no one way to go about recovery. If our career is our passion and we have the ability to continue work while receiving therapeutic support, our Case Managers, Monitoring Services, and Therapeutic Recovery Companions help us maintain our professional lives as well as our recovery. We may learn through an assessment and evaluation that being placed in a traditional treatment program is best for us, necessitating a temporary absence from our career path.
Some of us take a brief break. For some of us, our career plays a problematic role in our suffering, contributing to our stress. When we say goodbye to our work for recovery, we sometimes say goodbye to that work for life.
After treatment is complete, we work with our OPG team to decide our best next courses of action. A small percentage of people are ready and able to return to the demands of their career in full, albeit with some lifestyle changes. A larger percentage of people take what is called a “soft job” to ease into the working life. Recovery is, for many people, a learning process about the self. Discovering or rediscovering the self can lead to a change in desires and passions when it comes to a career. Post-treatment, goals might be set around developing a new career path instead of following an old one. Recovery gives us a chance at life, career, and success.
